When the Union was first set up, on 29 September 1966, under the name of Malta Government Clerical Union, the Union’s membership was restricted exclusively to employees in the clerical grades of the Government Civil Service. Eventually, in June 1973, the Union changed its name to Malta Government Employees Union, thus opening its doors to all employees in the Public Sector.
This necessitated the setting up of different Sections to cater for the various categories of workers, and this section became the General Service Section. As the name implied, the General Service Section was given the task of looking after the interests of members hailing from the General Service grades of the Public Service.
Eventually, following a Union re-organisation programme in February 2003, this Section was merged with the Departmental Section to form the Government Employees’ Section. As a result this Section now represents the interests of all Government employees.
